Portuguese Language Classes

Our Portuguese language classes are designed to help children maintain and strengthen their connection to the language and culture. Through engaging activities like storytelling, music, and interactive exercises, young learners develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a fun and supportive environment. Whether your goal is to preserve your child’s heritage language or foster bilingual growth, our classes provide the tools and confidence they need to succeed.

Portuguese Classes for Children in Burlington (Brazilian Heritage Language Program) Raising a child in more than one language often brings questions. Does bilingualism delay speech? Will learning two languages confuse my child? Current research provides clear answers. According to organizations such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Canadian Paediatric Society, bilingual exposure does not cause speech or language delays. Children are capable of learning and differentiating multiple languages from an early age. When vocabulary is considered across both languages, bilingual children typically develop within expected ranges. If a true language delay exists, it will be present across all languages, not caused by them. Removing a home language does not resolve communication challenges. In many cases, it limits meaningful interaction and weakens the child’s connection to family and identity. More Than Portuguese Classes At Speak Squad, our Brazilian Heritage Language Program is designed to support both language development and identity formation in bilingual children. This is not a traditional language class. It is a developmentally informed program grounded in how children naturally acquire communication skills. Through structured, play-based, and meaningful interactions, children experience Portuguese in a way that: • Supports expressive and receptive language development • Strengthens cognitive flexibility and learning skills • Reinforces cultural identity and family connection • Builds confidence in bilingual communication How Children Learn in Our Program Our sessions are designed with clinical awareness of language development and include: • Interactive storytelling and guided conversation • Music, rhythm, and cultural elements from Brazil • Play-based activities that stimulate communication • Opportunities for peer interaction and social language use Every activity is intentional. Every interaction supports how language develops in real life. Why Maintaining Portuguese Matters Maintaining the home language is not only about communication. It directly impacts: • Emotional connection within the family • Cultural identity and sense of belonging • Long-term cognitive and academic outcomes Children who remain connected to their first language develop a stronger foundation for learning across all environments.
